Launch of the Xp 33

During the days of 17-18 November, X-Yachts presented the brand-new Xp 33 in their showrooms in Haderslev.

First introduction of the Xp 33 on 17 November
The majority of the X-Yachts’ dealers from numerous countries arrived with potential customers to view the new Xp 33. There were representatives from Denmark, Germany, Holland, Belgium, England, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland.

The Xp 33 has been developed for the increasing customer group interested in an easy-handled and inexpensive sports boat with sailing pleasure as the highest priority. Sailing pleasure is not only proportional with maximum speed “downhill” but an undefined feeling of being aboard a boat with a perfect balance.
The Xp 33 is equipped with a relatively heavy lead keel, lower freeboard than on conventional boats, broader stern like in the X-79 days and built in vacuum-infused vinylester with local carbon fibre reinforcements in the bottom.
A carbon fibre bowsprit of 2 meters eliminates the need for symmetric spinnakers and enables the less trained crew to use an asymmetric spinnaker.

The furling jib with vertical battens makes sailing a pleasure – cruising as well as racing – and facilities for installing an anchor winch open up many opportunities for using the Xp 33 for cruising sailors.

The first test sail
During the weekend from 10 – 11 November, the Xp 33 was launched and test sailed by an experienced crew from X-Yachts as well as by suppliers of sail and mast.
The test sailing crew were Lars Jeppesen, X-Yachts part owner and responsible for technical issues – Dan Pedersen, quality coordinator and world champion sailor - Niels Ditmar, previous chief engineer at X-Yachts - John Morsing, responsible for motor and technical installations – Nico Rode, project manager of the production of the Xp 33 – Henrik Tarp, X-Yachts boat builder – and not least Henrik Søderlund, design guru and part owner of North Sails.

The wind was brisk – 7-8 m/s from Southwest which were perfect conditions for a first test sail. After a sail by motor throughout Haderslev Fjord, where John Morsing was performing various measurements and making sure that the selected folding propeller has the correct diameter, the sails were set.

The three sails of the boat were all delivered by North Sails, and together with Dan Pedersen, Henrik Søderlund tested and adjusted, mast bend & rig and forestay length, before the crew was able to evaluate the sailing qualities of this new boat.
To make the design and the functionality of the cockpit as efficient as possible, X-Yachts has introduced a new solution where the tiller is installed approximately 130 cm further away from the rudder stock.

The connection under the cockpit bottom is linked with a draglink system on which an autopilot actuator can also be installed; The position of the tiller makes the cockpit very uncluttered and functional.

The upwind boatspeed easily met the VPP targets for the conditions; 6.7 to 6.8 kts at 37 degree true wind angle. In the flat waters of the Baltic we were often able to sail higher and faster than this.

On the way back passing Årøsund, the large asymmetric spinnaker was set, and gybing angles and rudder were tested. The speed was impressive and the highest log showed 12.5 knots which is on the good side of what was expected of the polar data of the boat. Back down to downwind VMG angles we were still fast at around 8 kts boatspeed at 170 deg true. In surfing conditions we expect the 33 to be even faster and more exciting to sail.

The mast from John Mast has an extra reinforcement in the lower part to be able to take the required load of this boat which turned out to be perfect. So perfect that the boat with a carbon mast (extra equipment and not part of the standard package) will only achieve marginal advantages in few conditions.

The crew was in high spirits after a fine test sail enjoying a hot cup of coffee in the canteen of X-Yachts.
